Free fitness age test

How old is your body, really?

Answer five questions and find out whether your fitness is ahead of your age or behind it. No treadmill, no lab, no cost.

Your fitness age is an estimate of how old your body is in aerobic terms, rather than how many birthdays you have had. Someone of 55 can carry the fitness of a 40 year old, and someone of 30 can carry the fitness of a 50 year old. The gap between the two numbers is usually the most honest picture of where you are.

This calculator uses the published model from the HUNT Fitness Study, one of the largest population studies of its kind, which estimates aerobic fitness from your age, waist, resting pulse and how much you actually move. No treadmill, no lab, no exercise required, and it takes about thirty seconds.

Walk 21km of Loch Ness, free

This is an estimate based on the published HUNT Fitness Study model (Nes et al., 2011), which predicts aerobic fitness from age, waist, resting pulse and exercise habits. Typical error is around 3.5 ml/kg/min. It is not a medical assessment. Talk to your GP before starting a new exercise programme, particularly if you have a health condition or have been inactive for a while.

What your fitness age actually depends on

Four things go into the estimate. Your age is fixed. The other three are not, and two of them respond within weeks rather than years.

Your waist sits directly in the calculation, so a few centimetres shows up immediately. Your resting pulse falls with regular aerobic work, usually starting inside six to eight weeks. How often you move matters more than how hard you go, which is the part most people get backwards.

How accurate is it?

It is an estimate, with a typical error of about 3.5 ml/kg/min against a laboratory test. That is close enough to tell you which direction you are facing and whether you are moving, which is what most people want to know. It is not a medical assessment, and it is not a substitute for speaking to your GP if something concerns you.

The easiest way to change it

Walking, done regularly. Unglamorous, and the single most reliable lever most people have. The hard part is rarely the walking itself, it is having a reason to keep going once the novelty fades. That is what our quests are for: your everyday walking moves you along a real route, with milestones to reach and a story told as you go. The Loch Ness quest gives you the first 21km free.
